Any list of favourite Christmas songs is almost certain to include, ‘I’M DREAMING of a White Christmas’. It is possible that the traumatic experiences of the past year will lead some to ‘dream about more important things than a white Christmas!

Long before God’s Word appeared in the complete written form we have it in today (the Bible), He occasionally spoke to people through DREAMS. While Joseph was considering matters concerning his relationship with Mary, ‘an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a DREAM, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’, Matthew chapter 1 verse 20. Jesus’ birth was unique – He was born holy; therefore, sinless.

This was not the end of Joseph’s DREAMS. There were those who sought to kill Jesus from the moment He was born, e.g. Herod, the king. Once again, an angel of the Lord, appeared to Joseph in a DREAM, saying ‘Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring thee word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him’, Matthew chapter 2 verse 13. Herod died and, true to His word, the angel of the Lord returned and spoke in a DREAM to Joseph: ‘Arise and take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel’, Matthew chapter 2 verses 19 and 20. Wise men from the East came to worship Jesus. They also were ‘divinely warned in a DREAM that they should not return to Herod’, Matthew chapter 2 verse 11. God not only saves, but He also keeps His people!

Dreaming of a white Christmas’ might be a top Christmas song, BUT my much more important ‘dream’ (imaginary!) this Christmas, is that many will come to know the Saviour, who was the focus of Joseph’s dreams!
